Saturday Greyhound and Lurcher Training Sessions South Side of Birmingham

Saturday 01 May 2010

by PamD

Updated: Thursday 02 Feb

Pet Greyhound and Lurcher Training

Every Saturday 10am - 12pm

Immanuel Church Hall, Highters Heath Lane

Birmingham B14 4TB  (near the Maypole island)

We have other dog breeds in our class as well as a rabbit and a cat (almost real ones) to teach your dog to be less reactive.

What else do we do?

Teach your dog to listen to you and come back when you call

Give your dog confidence so seperation anxiety vanishes

Teach you some TTouch techniques to calm your dog

Play games and most of all have fun

Please give me a call - Julie on 07747754759 if you would like to come along.

We only do positive reward based training and I am a Tellington TTouch Practitioner.  TTouch teaches your dog to be more relaxed and less frightened by fireworks and loud noises, and to listen to you.

Dear all, from Saturday 4th February we're going to run a starter's class from 9am to 10am - anyone can come - it's aimed at people who have been training for a few weeks, those just beginning and anyone whose dog would benefit from a quieter class :) At 10am we'll then have the usual 10-12 class, if you've come early and your dog would be happy to go back into the car you'd be welcome to stay, chat and have a cuppa. Any questions please give me a ring on 0774 7754759. Julie

Hi everyone Just to remind you that we're back at Immanuel Church Hall on Saturday from 10am to 12am.
Norty Charlie lurcher was a star last Saturday at the auditions for the Good Cits Gold Team at Crufts 2012, he behaved impeccably (much to the amazement of the judges who all knew him) but then he couldn't resist doing two woofs at a dog he really doesn't like because it stares at him :( so understandably he was out!!! I forget how norty he was and he was a real star to have behaved so well all day (off lead mingling with strange dogs and everyone very nervous ... gulp) so we'll carry on practising and hopefully be invited to audition next year too :) Meanwhile we just need to sort out which greys and lurchers fom Saturday class are to be 'persuaded' to audition for the other Crufts teams :) J x

Friday 23 Dec 08:52

Thanks Clare, it was fun wasn't it?? Bit embarrassing when the greys had to be helped find the sausage by their humans LOL I think Wizzard was right - just trash the box hahahaha.
Hi Maureen .. yes of course you're welcome to come, you should have vouchers for 4 weeks free training when you got your dogs so you can use those then it's £4 a week for the first dog and £2 for the second :) January is a bit of a funny month .. we're at Solihull Riding Club on Friday Jan 6th, 13th and 27th (7pm to 9pm) as I've got some training courses myself but we're at Immanuel Hall on 21st January 10-12am and all of February. Bring your dogs' beds and some high value treats like cooked chicken, sausage, liver etc :) Any questions please give me a ring :) 07747754759 Julie x

Saturday 17 Dec 13:26

phew!, Little Milly here - just got back from a fabulous christmas party! We played games, musical statues - and a game to teach us how to rummage thro bins- with no-one saying 'leave it!'!! (Sausage hidden in boxes full of paper) Wizzard was so good at it he tried to eat the box! Lots of Yummy food for us, and the humans had a lovely buffet too. Thankyou to everyone, and Merry Christmas, Little Milly and Clarexx

Friday 16 Dec 08:27

A very Merry Christmas to one and all :) Just to remind everyone that Saturday training ends tomorrow 17th December with our Christmas party and then we're back at the Riding Club on Friday 6th January 12 (not superstitious at all) from 7pm and of course there's Jim Greenwoods training for nervous/aggressive dogs on the 8th January 12. Best wishes and a Happy New Year Julie, Charlie and Lucy - and of course from Liz, Dawn and Carol xxx

by tiggersslave

Thursday 08 Dec 10:36

Hi all I've just had a call from the Riding Club - they've double booked us tomorrow night and have had to cancel our free running session :( Please could you let people know and Liz and I will try to contact everyone too so no-one makes a wasted journey:( Sorry to have had to cancel at this late stage :(
If anyone is interested I've booked the wonderful lurcher trainer Jim Greenwood to do a Workshop with us on Sunday 8th January 2012. Check out Jims website .. he'll be doing at least one three hour session for dogs who are aggressive/lack socialisation/have problem behaviour .. hopefully Lyna will tell about the Workshop they went to recently when Jim worked with the dogs and had dogs off-lead (muzzled) together. He'll give you a great insight into your dog's language and how to read it. Cost will be about £40 per dog/handler place, ring me on 0774 7754759 if you're interested and a donation will be made to the RGT too.

If Alfie would like to come to the Saturday training class after Christmas (we start again on 14th January 2012) he'd be very welcome and we have had some very nervous dogs at class who have done really well especially as we do some of the Tellington TTouch which is great for building confidence and calming dogs :) Just give me a ring if you want to come along :) Julie

A huge WELL DONE to everyone who took their Kennel CLub Good Citizen Bronze Test on Saturday :) Everyone worked very hard and the hounds were a real credit to you all :) Some people were caught out by the 'stay in one place for one minute' so didn't get the rosette but they will next time (I've got another method to try LOL) and many congratulations to Tony and Beau, Val and Rosie, Karen and Boogie, Alison and Gracie and a special well done to Mark with Jet :) I'm sure Mark won't mind me saying that he has had a long journey with Jet but with Mark's dedication and effort it's all paid off and Jet was a star on Saturday :)
Well done everyone who 'had a go' - you are all great :) See you on Saturday .. and you too little Milly :) J xxxx

Hi julie, hope you and everyone at training are well. sorry to hear Dawn hasn't been well, but pleased she is making a good recovery! We haven't been able to make it to training for quite a while as Samuel has started playing rugby on saturday mornings now, so its going to be quite difficult to come regularly. Sidney is doing really brilliantly and he brings us so much love and fun to our family. He is a real mommy's boy!!!! He gets on so well now with my sister's jack russell, Holly, and its lovely to see them play together! Say hi to everyone and training!
Love Sue, Trev, boys & Sidneyxx

Also to let all Dawn's friends know - she's been home about 10 days now and is doing fantastically well :) She asked me to thank everyone for their cards and 'get well soon' wishes as they really cheered her up :) Julie xx

Tuesday 14 Jun 11:19

Hi Julie
Sorry we haven't been able to make training for a few weeks, its been really busy for us with the kids having lots of things on etc...they have a better social life than me!!! and we went to River Cottage at the weekend, but I'm gutted we missed the test...maybe next time! Well done to everyone though who took part, it sounds like you had a good time. Could you let me know too where you will be over the next few weeks if not at Immanuel Hall :) Suexx

by tiggersslave

Tuesday 14 Jun 08:09

Thanks Deb that's a really lovely comment and just what we try to achieve every Saturday :) Mand we're all at different stages and like people -dogs learn at different rates so even some that have been coming for a while are still learning to be relaxed and listen to their owners whereas some are just really quick to pick up things :) Like Debs said we all help and support each other .. and no one can have had a much worse dog than mine so I know how it feels to have a reactive, anti-social dog :) Please give me a ring and I'll let you know what we're up to for the next couple of weeks cos we're not at Immanuel Hall till July when we start back there on Saturdays:) Julie xx

by Deb

Monday 13 Jun 19:21

The class is open to everyone which is one of the best things about it, we all learn from each other and new owners can see how the old hands have progressed albeit in a short time.
As a first time dog owner I have found the advice and support I have been given with my Lurcher to be invauable.
Nearly all the dogs are retired greyhounds or rescue lurchers.Julie is a great support and everyone tries to support and help each other with their dogs.
It is a non judgmental place to take a reactive dog and learn strategies to manage.
Above all it is great fun and a non presurised environment in which to work and be with the hounds.

by Mand,Gent&Emily

Monday 13 Jun 13:06

Hi Julie. If you're all so far along with the training, is okay for newbies to attend? You all sound like you have so much fun. Mand

by tiggersslave

Monday 13 Jun 08:29

I love seeing how far you've all come with your dogs, its so rewarding for all of us to see them improve and learn how to be a happy retired dog :) Who says you can't train greyhounds :) LOL. I'm glad you still think its fun even tho we're having a go at the Kennel Club tests, I don't ever want training class to be pressure and hassle and thank you for being such a great bunch of people :) My 'spy' in the camp on said that all of you were so close to passing the Bronze and those who didn't quite make it should be very proud of what you achieved despite not quite getting there this time.. just remember how far your hounds have come. A huge WELL DONE to everyone :) Jools xx

Saturday 11 Jun 19:51

I agree with Deb we had a good time today. I wore Lola's rosette all afternoon at Solihull Carnival and I am so incredibly proud of her. Both girls have now crashed out after a very busy day. Not even sure we will get them out for a walk tonight.
Just want to say thanks to Julie (and to Dawn & Liz) for all the work you put in to get us and our lovely dogs to this stage. When we first got Lola and she knew nothing really I could never have imagined that she woud achieve a fraction of what she has achieved so far. It's been a very special journey with a lovely bunch of people and dogs. For those who didn't quite make it today, and those in the group who have yet to have a go, keep trying and best of all enjoy the time spent practising with your own special dogs xxxx

Well done to everyone today the best bit is the fun we all had.Its great to see how much everyone wants to see all the dogs do well and how much the dogs are loved.
PS I am still parading around with my Rosette on and Millie has some very nice treats but has spent most of the afternoon asleep following the lead of her big sister who has also just finished her exams(a levels)

Hi Jude
That sounds like fun :) I don't blame you for opting out .. I think a few of the others would prefer to come with you too LOL rather than do their Bronze Test :) I know they can do all the exercises its just if nnerves get them on the day :( but its only dog training :) Have a great weekend, hope the weather stays dry for you (is that a sign I'm getting old when I only want to camp in the dry?). Look forward to seeing you and the lovely Elsie in 3 weeks time .. and she wasn't too grumpy at all :) J xxx

Many thanks to everyone who made Elsie and me feel very welcome on Saturday- despite her being so grumpy :) Had every intention of coming this Saturday but I've just won tickets to Download Festival which is this w/e so I'll be enjoying/enduring Rock music and general squalor at Donnington Park instead :) (I'm guessing this is another excuse you've not heard before!!) Hopefully we'll be there the next time (which will be in 3 weeks) and good luck to everyone doing the test.

Hi Sue
He was looking better before you took him home wasn't he so that's good- probably just atweak like we get when we overdo the gardening :) There are lots of good products about, I used to give mine SYnflex which I got from the internet (Synflex for pets .. 07415 626717), after you'd done the initial loading dose it worked out about £9 a month which I thought was good value :) Hope the weather warms up for your camping .. I'm going in June and it'll rain .. it always does :( See you when you get back :) J xx

Hi Julie
Just wanted to say thank you for Friday and to let you know Sid is absolutely fine and he's not limping anymore!!! It was lovely to see him having a good run, it brought tears to my eyes. I will definitely look at starting him on Glaucosamine though. We won't be at class on Saturday as we are taking Sid on his first camping trip in a tent :) :) So we will see you the week after. Thanks again for Friday and the advice! Suex

Hi Karen
Glad that Boogie and Fletch enjoyed the course :) Its based on a new doggie sport called Rally O which is great fun tho like you said more of a problem for us humans than the dogs :) Hopefully the KC will do a greyhound version with no 'sitting' in it and we can have a proper go at it :)
Don't forget that Immanuel Hall are having their Spring Fair (all welcome) next Saturday so we are training on Friday night :) Jxxx

Hi Karen
Sorry about the hiccup, I went to Tilley Farm in Bath where the TTouch courses are held to a fascinating talk on tension patterns in dogs and their links to behaviour ..as we're doing the Bronze Test soon I didn't want to cancel a training so we brought it forward to 9am and finished at 11am then manically tidied up and dashed off. Back to normal 10-12 next week but please email me if you're not coming next week as we're elsewhere on Friday 20th and there's no Training on Saturday 21st May- theres a Spring Fair at the Church and they're using the Hall. :) Hope Fletch is ok now?

Training statred earlier as Julie is on a course this afternoon in Bath. The car park was quite full before we started with visitors to the church.
We are back to normal time next week and hopefully fletcher will be OK for next week as I cant wait to see his recall.
Hope Fletcher recovers well.Deb and Millie

Saturday 07 May 11:34

Hi Julie, just wondered if the time of dog school had changed this week(sat 6thMay) only we arrived at 9.30 and the carpark was full so couldn't unload the wheelchair and had to come home......via the vets, Fletcher managed to cut his paw on one of the footplates in the car, blood everywhere so took him straight there. They've kept him in as they will have to give him an anesthetic to sort it out :(....... Will hopefully make the next class as they've both been practicing their recall and they can't wait to show you :)

I think one person wanted a small fluffy grey lmao. Hope urs r all doin ok n commitment indeedy. Ps I was thinking of becoming cracker cus he's old, pulls on the lead n gettin stuben n Charlie cus he barks n growls lol. O that reminds me of the women who was about t rehome a grey n suddenly changed her mind cus she heard him barking, she wanted one that didn't. Madness. Thankfully there's a hell of a lot of great owners out there. C u soon. X

Lol Sara! I remember the first day Buddy came, I opened the front door to see this enormous strange looking dog walking towards me, I stuck on a fixed grin and tried not to panic! It took him about 1 minute to settle and me about a week to get used to him! Best thing I ever did, can you imagine me asking the rehomer to take him back because he was too big and didn't match the colour scheme? I would have missed out on the most gentle, funny dog and not had Jack and Penny...word of the day...commitment! x

Hahahaha I forgot about making them colour co-ordinate with your furnishings (yes we've even had dogs returned because they don't match the suite) ... every request catered for and I did forget that his 'stays' are just phenomenal ... about 8 weeks sit stay at the last count so maybe Ruby should be taking lessons from Door Stop :)

Monday 02 May 17:33

Hello Julie, we bought one of these new dogs (without wheels) for a Christmas present for our human brother. (He lives in a flat and can't have a pesky hound like us.) He has called his dog 'Door Stop'. When we went to visit him, Door Stop was very quiet and well behaved. He even held the door open to let us in. He didn't try to steal our food and didn't bark or howl once. Ruby was a bit jealous of him because he did a sit and stay for the whole time that we were there, and it's taken her 15 months of going to classes every Wednesday to manage one minute! Love from Olive and Ruby x x

EXCITING NEW DOG COMING SOON TO PERRY BARR

Ruth and I have been developing a new type of dog which we will soon be able to offer for adoption ... he never needs walking, he never pulls on the lead, he never has 'accidents', he never needs feeding, he doesn't even need training :)
For some time Ruth and I have seen a real market for a dog like this - you can tell people you have rescued a dog and you will feel really proud but the great thing about this NEW dog is you don't have to take any time or effort to help him understand his new life or even find out how much food he should really have or even learn how to help him not be so frightened by his new world. You won't have to ask for any advice because this NEW DOG is extremely well behaved from the very first moment you meet him or her - he's not very interactive but so what .. that means you won't need to put any time or effort in to help him settle or to understand that he's frightened and scared in a strange new world and be sympathetic ..You won't have to ask us for help on training or feeding and certainly won't have to spare any time at all helping your NEW DOG.
As this NEW DOG will be very popular with some people we will have to charge a lot of money for him but that's so we can help the other people who want a loyal, loving family member to share their home with for many years and who they want to help into retirement by taking time and effort to settle their new friend into their loving caring home.

This NEW DOG? .. well of course he's a toy stuffed dog .... please tell Ruth what colour you want and if you want the dog on wheels :)

Hi Tash
Yes me and Charlie were missing a grey so much that we've now got Lucy from Greyhound Gap .. the others were the same colour as Tig and I couldn't do that :( Lucy was found straying in Stoke, she did her 7 days in the pound and Grey Gap adopted her .. there's apic on their website and (so far) she's very well behaved and a real sweetie tho grey girls are quite sneaky bless 'em so I'm sure we'll have some fun with her :) Jools xx Still unpacking boxes after 20 years in my house LOL

Monday 21 Mar 09:28

Lucy? Have you got another dog Julie? Sorry we weren't at training on Saturday, we're packing our lives into boxes to hopefully move on Friday, so we'll see you in a few weeks (when I've discovered which box I packed the dogs in!) ;0)

Monday 21 Mar 09:22

LOL It was such a laugh wasn't it Debs :) :) Charlie is great at the Twist but .. I'm not very good at the 'thro the legs' one :) so he just gives up and lies down LOL I've got a few more tricks we can play with too and I reckon it'll look great when we use it with our heelwork:)
Yes lovely to be back at training and see everyone .. Lucy is such a sweetie tho her greyhound girl character is coming out .. she grabbed a biscuit from under Charlies nose this morning and ran off with it LOL Madam !!! Mind you I left them at home last Thursday night, when I came back Charlie had let them both into the hall then doubled back leaving Lucy on her own there, he'd then pulled the doorstop away from the lounge door and ransacked the kitchen ... don't you just love them :) See you next week :) LOL

Sunday 20 Mar 12:30

We have been practising the new tricks from class. The "twist" is working well with all the human members of the family quite impressive but as for the through the legs.Whilst the humans are all contorted Millie has decided to sit looking whimsically at her human family and then swiping the treat out of their hands with her paw.
Good to see so many at training especially nice to see Bluey and "loopy" Lulu again. not forgetting the gorgeous Lucy with her new mummy Julie and brother Charlie.

took Millie and her dad to Brean sands today, she deserved a treat after real doggie training last night.
Never been there before but what a fantastic place to let the dogs run.Not only did we find a cafe open but well behaved dogs were allowed in as well. After several hours of
running on the beach Millie is now crashed out on the sofa and I will be joining her shortly.

hi Debs ooooppppss sorry I suddenly realised you didn't mean that the Bronze was hard ... you all do really well at training and you'd all do brilliantly when we hold the Good Cits tests. by Deb

Friday 04 Mar 19:41

Hi Julie that comment was my attempt at irony!
I think I was expecting that the dogs in the silver class would be a bit more compliant/more advanced and doing a lot better than Millie! I guess what I was meaning is that our dogs should do really well if we did the awards and could hold their own in any class if not knock spots of some of the real dogs!.
it took my half a century to become a dog owner and the doggie world at times can be a little confusing for a novice.
It is really good to see how well we have both progressed under your expert tuition as have all our friends at Saturday class See you Saturday.Deb and Millie xx

by tiggersslave

Friday 04 Mar 08:38

LOL Yep Charlie thinks all should stick together when there are real dogs about :) and he knows who 'his' class are so I know he was really pleased to see Millie :)
Dunno what you mean that the Bronze is hard :) .. trust me -most of Saturday class could easily pass the Bronze (the usual thing people have problems with is the minute stay) We're applying to become a listed Kennel Club training club so we can run the Good Citizen Scheme tests for anyone who wants to have a go and some of you are even doing Gold level exercises now :) but we'll keep doing all the other fun things too..have faith :) Oh and keep practising the stays :) Jxxx

I hope your ok julie,im working again this saturday,so unfortunately wont be there this week, but have a week off after that so should be ok for the next two saturdays after that. Its so frustrating not being able to go every week, and does have quite a impact on bens behaviour when he meets other dogs, going to training really helps his confidence, apart from missing everyone there. Sounds like Deb's doing really well with Millie well done,I think she could do with taking Ben along to training to see how she gets on with two! I couldn't believe how good they all were with Lucky (aptly named LOL) but my heart did stop when he jumped at Penny ... she was brill and we wouldn't blame her for thinking her lunch had arrived as she's not long retired but you did brilliantly and I don't think she reacted at all to him :) I don't think Alison's about on Saturday but DeeDee was next on her list to bring training so we'll see if we can help her change her nickname from Miseryguts :) when she comes the week after :)

Now, now, Deb and Julie, you're giving poor old Penny a bad name! Didn't you all see how she ignored the small fluffy dog on Saturday (Lucky?) even when he jumped on her, poor Penny...of course it was nothing to do with the cheese I was frantically stuffing through her muzzle that distracted her! She's great with other dogs as long as they don't move, or move very slowly...I can see this limited patience having it's drawbacks...lol! Had fun on Saturday, looking forward to seeing you again next week. ps I popped into the kennels on Saturday and saw Dee Dee, oh, Julie, if only there was a special someone out there to give her a chance... ;0) x

Wednesday 16 Feb 08:38

Hi all
Many many thanks for the lovely comments and kind thoughts, I'll miss Tig dreadfully, even now the house is so empty and Charlie spent ages looking for her yesterday tho he had said Goodbye to her. She was my first greyhound and was a star - and a total baggage and I loved her very much. The Dogs Trust said that she was so nervous they never thought they'd rehome her but I took her home and we had 10 years together, she was intelligent, beautiful and very norty .. she won at Crufts in the show ring and would wee on my clothes or Moke/Charlie's beds if we annoyed her so we all knew just who was in charge!
She had been very ill since December when I found a lump on her side, it was xrayed and aspirated and was a spindle cell tumour- at 12 and as she hated hospitals, I took her to my homeopathic vet who has treated her for years. Chris's remedies reduced the tumour and we hoped that the internal bit would vanish completely, she was bright, in no pain and still mooched about the garden- she'd begun to eat well but in the end her heart had had to work extra hard as the tumour had affected her lungs and it gave out - I'd always hoped that my dogs would go peacefully in their sleep and Tig did. I am heartbroken at losing her but I can't be too sad - unlike many dogs she wasn't in any pain, she was at home, it was quick and she knew how loved she was... like her Aunty Ruth said she's now at the Bridge weeing on Moke's bed, putting him in his place and playing with all our other dogs who are there too.
I can't thank Ruth enough for all she did for Tig and me yesterday and every other time we've needed her xxx Thank you Ruth xxxx

Wednesday 16 Feb 06:39

Tigger looked so peaceful on her bed where she had passed away. If only a few more could pass this way it would be wonderful. Although it is such a shock, it beats booking the dreaded appointment which most of us have to go through.

I took Tigger to Heart of England Pet Crem and spent some time with Julie who was heartbroken understandably but knows it was Tigger's time..... she had had Tigs since she was about 20 months old and she would have been 12 next month - what a wonderful long life of love she has had - something all greyhounds would wish to have the pleasure of having. Nite nite Tigs.... love Auntie Ruth xxx ps go and wee on Mokes bed at the bridge... I know you will! xxxx

TBH from our experience it'd make him expert in burglary, bin raiding and anything else our norty greys can share ... maybe he's just getting ready for Red Nose Day :)

Hey Dave -Pauls been practising :) You should have seen Lena's Send to Bed exercise ... it was so good she and Paul got a round of applause :) Look forward to seeing you all soon .. shall I write you a sick note so you can come training next Saturday :) J xx

We have a red nosed greyhound who decided to help us humans with a bit of diy ,I wonder if training would stop this problem. He loves red paint!luckily it has not harmed him.I had better hide my glasses after reading the last comment.

cant come this sat as working, but hope to make it week after, sounds like Paul gets the blame for everything, but knowing him i'm prepared to stick my neck out and say he's not the type to chew phones and glasses! hello to everyone and see you all soon dave&maria, blue&ben x.

Friday 11 Feb 14:19

Haha I have learned the hard way about being tidy around the house (2 mobile phones and my chewed glasses are testament to this LOL!) And my hall cupboard (where the dog food, treats and soft toys awaiting repair live) has a designer dog proof catch on the double doors fashioned tastefully from an orange Sainsburys carrier bag!! Ideal Home eat your heart out.... :) We never had a problem with Lola but Lena likes to get in there and have a good root about! PS we were thinking of skipping the nappy stage and go straight to potty training now she can almost sit on command ;) xx

by tiggersslave

Friday 11 Feb 13:44

You know that's an excellent selling point for greys and lurchers too :) .. they really make you very tidy about the house tho I'm not sure that my old dog lead (tying the kitchen door shut so Charlie can't help himself) would feature in Homes and Gardens :). I think Lena needs to take lessons from Tig .. now Tig would have weed on some of my clothes to make sure I understood her feelings :) J xx

My daddty should really learn not to answer the phone and leave his chinese takeaway in the living room! Must ask him to order sweet and sour next time without green peppers, dont think much of them far too healthy for a lurcher. see you all on Saturday love Millie.PS will Lena be wearing a nappy .

Hi Julie, would it be ok if I brought Penny to training this Saturday? I know how much she liked going with Alison...I'll try and pay attention and not show her up! I'm leaving Buddy at home, he's so calm normally, but turned into a clown in your class, so embarrassing! x

Monday 17 Jan 10:34

Hi all
Oh that's great - they were really settled this week weren't they :) ... getting doggy brains to work is very tiring for them too tho I thought all the handlers worked as hard as the dogs this week :)
Thanks Debs .. don't worry we've all been thought mad for years and years with our greys :) Welcome to the madhouse ... oooh now there's an idea for a name for our class LOL.
I don't know where the extra pounds come from Linda .. I walked Charlie for miles over Christmas so I should have lost loads .. maybe it was all the breakfast mince pies ??? LOL

What a difference the 2nd training session made, we walked Pip and Molly lastnight and met two dogs on our way, Molly with the leave its and the quick pull on the lead never even barked and Pip had a little cry but even he never bothered after! And that was walking past on the same path!! Big progress!! And getting them home after having a stop at Daybreak for nail trimming knackered them out - they are still spark out now! Training really is worth the time and effort x Roll on next Sat!!

Friday 14 Jan 19:39

Thats good news.I made some more doggy biscuits and sold them at work this week so there is another £12 to go in the pot.I think I am developing a reputation of being the mad woman that makes and sells doggy biscuits especially as I have got a few of the humans to try them( the cheesy ones not the pilchard flavoured ones!)
See you in the morning oh and trust me to boast about my success at training Milly nearly had a cat this week!

I've just emptied the pot and we've raised over £90 :) so a very, very big thank you to everyone who contributed :) A special thanks to Debs and Linda who made biscuits and cakes and added to the tea/coffee fund :)

Hi Deb
Hope you don't want us to train your husband LOL ... we can't really work miracles you know :) :) :) That's great that Millie listened, you and she practice in between Saturday classes so I can't take all the credit ... you do so much yourself and its fantastic when you see the results ... what a good girl Millie is :) I'm not sure my Charlie would come back if there were THREE squirrels around (never mind one cat :( ) ... if ever you want to swop for a week just say the word :) :)
Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday for more chaos oooppps meant meaningful, serious training .. now where did I leave that cat ???

Mind you when he took her out on his own she ran off chasing squirrels!

Friday 10 Dec 11:52

I used to ocassionally see my Tigger's head and neck shaking/wobbling .. a bit like a nodding dog :( She almost didn't seem to notice it - she'd come out for breakfast shaking but I'd rush her to the vet and it would have stopped by the time we got there ...my vet thought it might be epilepsy but said they wouldn't medicate until she was having at least three episodes a week ... then I realised that she was lying with her head and neck drooping over the edge of a deep duvet so I took her to a chiropractor and we think it was just a trapped nerve ... a few regular tweaks and I've not seen her do it since :) Glad they love the TTouches, we may need to discuss the snapping with them LOL why don't they copy good habits :)

Friday 10 Dec 10:08

The vet doesn't know why it hapenned. She seems to be better so were just keeping our fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again. We've been doing the ttouches which they both seem to love. Rolos even started snapping, and chillie has snapped once but at richs mom and dad. There bond has grown rapidly which is lovely to see. Were all looking forward to coming to the next class xx

Friday 10 Dec 07:56

Hi Manda
That's a shame but don't worry we'll see you on the 18th which is our last training before Christmas - we start again on Saturday 8th January. They sound like they are doing very well, what happened with Chilli? If you try the TTouches that we did a bit of in class they will relax her and calm her which may help her ....
See you all soon

Rich has to work on Saturday so we can't make it up and get back in time so he can get to work :(. Going to try and make it to the next week. We have been doing training in and out the house with both of them and have found a safe field for them to run around in and do the re-call and both are coming back! We also introduced Chillie to a tiny jack russel after a few grumbles at him and trying to chew through her muzzle she gave up and accepted it, cats are next!! We have had to stop her training for a couple of days though due to a trip to the vet yesterday our poor little girl had a neurological episode :(. It's the second one she has had this week so we are monitoring her and she is lapping up all the extra fuss and treats of us and Rolo (he has been licking her tummy!) xx

Hi Manda
Sorry to have missed your call, I think I've left you a message :) Yes Saturday is fine, please bring their beds (or something soft for them to lie on), soft high value treats like liver, cheese, sausage etc and muzzles if you want :) We train 10 till 12 and as greys learn if you do short bursts especially when they first retire we mix training and recalls and anything else we can think of :)
Any questions please give me a ring otherwise I'll see you on Saturday :)

Tuesday 09 Nov 08:21

Hi Lisag
There are a number of dog clubs around and about but we set up the special greyhound classes because you train greyhounds differently to 'real' dogs and they don't usually do very well in a mixed class initially. The Saturday class is close to the Maypole island which is a straight road from Junction3 of the M42 so easy from the M40/M42 and we have people come from Coventry and Burton. If you want to give me a ring about the class please call me on 0774 7754759.
Best wishes
Julie

:) Hi yes that'd be fine, just give me a ring please before you come along. We're not at Immanuel Hall on the 16th October as we'll be at the Dog Show but will probably swop the class to the 17th but I'll confirm that.
Best wishes

Tuesday 13 Jul 09:51

Hi Alison
You'd be very welcome to come, we do have places and if you haven't still got your vouchers we ask you pay for 4 weeks the first time you come (£15 -maths isn't our strong point :=)) then it's £4 a week after that... we find that often greys take a little bit of time to settle into training so often owners feel they're not getting anywhere but in our experience the greys are very intelligent, you train them differently to 'real' dogs and they just need time and patience .. some learn very quickly and - like people, others just need a bit longer. Bring plenty of high value treats and their bed (or something soft for them to lie on), if you want to give me a ring my numbers 0774 7754759 ... we're doing a few different things in August too - we're going to use the arena at Solihull Riding Club for a couple of weeks and doing a pub walk/Treasure Hunt on Bank Holiday Saturday.

Best wishes

Hello

This is a message for Julie. Are there any places on this training and if so how much does it cost. We are thinking about some training for Rose and James, greyhounds we adopted last year.

Many thanks.

Hi Megan, thanks for your comment and I'm sorry to hear about your cat. We always promote responsible ownership when homing a grey and they're homed with a muzzle. We also issue the free training for new owners to help people handle their dogs. Unfortunately there are still some irresponsible people with dogs (of all breeds) which gives a bad name to pet owners which is really sad.

We really hope people will take advantage of this fantastic training on offer.... after all - it's FREE for new owners!

by Megan

Saturday 19 Jun 22:27

I suspect my comment will not be approved. I don't have a problem with the dogs. Just want to bring awareness of what can happen if you are not a responsible dog owner.

by Megan

Saturday 19 Jun 22:25

I think thisad is a really good idea. My precious cat was chased down my road and killed by a grey-hound lurcher last year. The dog had escaped from the house. By coincidence (i hope) another cat in the next street was killed by a grey-hound lurcher. Unfortunately it was witnessed but the cat was never recovered as the dog owner ran off with the cat.
I understand predator/prey relationships but would urge all dog owners to attend this training!

Just so the greys don't panic ... we train indoors in a lovely big safe hall and only go outside when its nice and warm and dry :=))
