October Noise Phobia Classes by Julie Sadler at Lapworth Village Hall Solihull

Sunday 31 Oct 2010

by PamD

Updated: Saturday 30 Oct

Does Your Dog Dread Fireworks? Is he terrified of the noise? Do you have to sedate him? Try the Tellington TTouch training method

TTouch is simple, easy and effective training that improves your dog’s confidence and teaches your dog to think rather than just react so you teach him not to be so frightened

We will donate £5 for every booking through the RGT

You use the Tellington TTouch whenever your dog is scared and help it cope with stressful situations, many people report that their dogs no longer need sedation at firework time as you train them to relax.Rather than stroke your dog you ‘TTouch’ him or her, you activate the nervous system so you are training them to relax- and its great to be able to calm your dog when he is so terrified and -unlike stroking, doing TTouch is not reinforcing his fear so you are helping him not just sympathising.

We are running a number of TTouch afternoons in October so you can learn TTouch in time for Firework Night. We’ll teach you the basic ttouches, work with your dogs and also introduce you to the Bodywraps – great for nervous or noise sensitive dogs & especially useful at firework time .

TTouch is also great for any dog lacking confidencAe, nervous or a loved old friend who you would like to help keep supAple, this Workshop could also help, please ring Julie to discuss.

This class is being held at Lapworth Village Hall Solihull

Any queries or for a booking form please email Julie at ttouchgreyhound@aol.com or call 0774 7754759

FABULOUS !!!! Thank you all so much for telling us how you're all getting on ...Ali and I have been doing TTouch for a long time but we love that we can teach other people how to do it AND IT WORKS for them too :) It really teaches your dog to calm down and like Fatharry I find that because I know that it works I'm more confident and calmer cos I know that I can deal with things that scare my dogs .. so it just gets better and better. :) The other great thing is because its a training method you CAN touch your dogs when they are so frightened because TTouch teaches them to be calm .. I know when my dogs are so scared I really want to cuddle them :( ... so now I TTouch them :)

Working Saturdays gets in the way doesn't it ? Laura and Karen your dogs missed Lena's birthday pilchard cake which she brought to class on Saturday (she made it herself she said :) .. my dogs are buying me the Galloping Gourmet Cook Book for Christmas ... subtle that :)

We're trying to organise another morning Noise Phobia session .. probably on Sunday 5th December so plenty of time before New Year to get practising, I'll let you know the exact date when we've booked the Hall, it'll probably be either at Lapworth Village Hall which is about 5 miles from Notcutts at Junction 4 of the M42 or at Immanuel Hall which is Highters Heath Lane, near the Maypole Island, Bham, B14 4TB.

Thanks again, so glad your dogs are doing well :)

Just wanted to update on Boogie and Fletcher, both have got through the fire works, Boogie was a little anxious at first but we did all the touches especially her ears and although not happy she wasn't shaking and eventually dozed off to sleep. Fletcher was really good too he was on his back most of the night.
Sorry we've not been to doggie school for a while Laura has been on weekends for the last month or so but hopefully will get some Saturdays off soon, we've missed seeing everyone. Thanks again for all the help and advice, if your dog gets anxious or frightened definately give Julie and the team ago best thing we ever did :)

Its great to hear Charlie is coping with the fireworks,im sure it will help him with other noises too. Ive found I'm more relaxed as I know what to do and the dogs really sense that, so they are more relaxed as well. Seems it was a really useful class that has acheived results well done Julie & Ali. ps...there were muffins available at this event, but no pilchard cake!

Kevin is definitely happier in his wrap, and I put it on Moo when we go walkies because she's not keen on other breeds, and I've noticed the difference there too. Julie - a few people have also asked me about future classes, maybe one in time for the next firework silly season - New Year?

Friday 05 Nov 22:13

So glad I was able t go t the ttouch class. I think Charlie is coping so well. He has his wrap on n is curled up with my uncle on my uncles bed. We are acting as nothing wrong n relaxed n hes not even shakin now. I showed my uncle the some ttouch touches n he is using them on Charlie as I wright this. I wud highly recommend trying it. I hav been using the wrap on Charlie at the kennels n even Ruth can't believe how much calmer he is with it on. That's again Julie. I was sceptical but it does really work. X ps a few people hav asked me if there wil b another class sometime. Lol x

When we first got Ruby she was a bag of nerves on Bonfire night, sounds just like Buddy is tonight, we tried loads of things, then last year we went to the Perry Barr Annual Dog Show and there was a stall selling TT bandages for about £8 so I gave it a try - amazing - shes so calm I thought she'd gone deaf ! She even has her usual nightly 'dreams'- I'm nice and relaxed and I'm sure she picks up on that. I know its the bandage cos her Dad put it on wrong tonight and her tail was right under and she was looking up and all round the room having a panic but I put it on properly and shes back to serenity!

Friday 05 Nov 21:03

Thanks Ruth, he was bad last year, but we'd only had him a few months then, this year he "seemed" ok...weirdly Jack, who's the more skittish of the two is all right! I'm ignoring, yawning and doing yoga, fingers crossed! x

Friday 05 Nov 20:36

IGNORE HIM! I know it is hard but it works. Tomorrow feed him some starchy foods ie pasta mid afternoon to make him feel full and tired so he can get through tomorrow night's fireworks. DAP diffusers are also excellent. We have herbal calming tablets and DAPs available at the kennels. I know it seems mad but yawn & stretch in front of Buddy - if you are performing relaxed body language - he will pick up on this and hopefully feel much safer with you around xxxx

Friday 05 Nov 20:24

I so wish I could've come to the classes, poor Buddy is beside himself, he's lying behind me in the study panting and shaking. I tried him in the garden about 5 thinking it would be safe, but one loud bang had him trying to get in through the window, I'm just thankful he had some lunch because he wouldn't even come out of the study for his favourite bone tonight! Any suggestions, I early walked, have closed the curtains, the TV's on a bit louder...he's found himself a safe place...do I ignore him, comfort him...any ideas...?

Huh? There was no mention of having an accompanying glass of wine on my training day!? So, with that revelation now in mind, might go and do a bit of T-Touch now... ;0)

Tuesday 02 Nov 11:31

Hi T, Sarah and Fatharry :) Thank you for the lovely comments ... I must toughen up the training class tho I'm not sure you're supposed to enjoy it LOL .. glad you do tho :) I'm sure I've got a spare wrap around Sarah that you can have, I'll see Liz later and see if she can drop it off or I'll pop in :) The dogs all did so well on Saturday didn't they ... even Blue was quiet ocassionally :) and she was a good girl ... T- this is why I never had kids, my dogs just accept that TTouch is usually accompanied by a small glass of red wine :) I'm sure kids would ask why ??? LOL

See you on Saturday or soon :)

hi sara sorry to hear about charlie, instead of killing them i reckon you would get more enjoyment placing a rocket in an appropriate place and lighting it .I have checked the firework code and it doesnt say you cant do it! I would gladly help. In the meantime I will gladly chauffeur you and charlie to and from the class at lapworth as you have done so much to help us.Julies classes are really good and you will get more out of a proper class.Have a think about it ,ill ring the kennels soon to find out if you can go, regards dave {blue & bens dad x.

Hi Sarah I'll try to pop over to the kennels, unfortunately I've got one of the lurgy bugs that are around and I don't think you'd like to see me very much at the mo but I'll come over as soon as I can and I'll definitely show you some of the TTouches at the Show. Please give Cracker and Charlie a big hug from us all ... my Charlie would like to flatten the yobs that threw a firework at your Charlie and see how they like to be terrified :( See you very soon.

Hi all
Many thanks for telling everyone how great TTouch is and that IT WORKS :) When I've had dogs that were scared of loud noises and were shaking I wanted to stroke them and cuddle them ... now I know that trainers tell you not to because that 'reinforces the fear' well doing TTouch is completely different to just stroking so you CAN touch (or rather TTouch :) ) them and better still you have trained them to calm down so they settle and learn that there's nothing to be frightened of :)
We are at Evesham on 23rd October and here at Lapworth (not far from Notcutts/Box Trees) on the 31st so please bring your froghtened dogs along and we'll show you how to help them - plus the RGT gets a £5 for everuyone who comes via this website :)

I went to the same class on Saturday with Boogie and Fletcher and have to echo what Em has said. I was sceptical that this would work but having tried everything else this was our last hope. I have to admit that it works Boogie is absolutely terrified of fireworks, footballs, children screaming, helicopters, road sweepers....the list is endless, and like Kevin once she is in full panic mode it can take hours for her to calm down.
Even attempts of going to doggie school have caused full blown panic attacks and often meant that we didn't even make it out of the car. By the end of the session the volume for the firework CD was at sixteen and although a little trembly Boogie actually laid down and dozed off. Fletcher even succumbed and he's a real worrier and pants most of the time, tho I'm not sure he's forgiven me for letting julie put the band around his head but none the less it works.
We did ten minutes tonight and both dogs promptly dozed off. All dogs are different but as I found its worth a try.
My thanks everyone it was a great way to spend an afternoon and I thoroughly recomment it:)

I went along to Julie's noise phobia class at Highters Heath yesterday and I cannot believe the difference in Kev. Don't get me wrong, he was still stressing for England when the fireworks CD came on really quietly, but the difference this time was that instead of continuing to pant, pace and shake for 4 hours after the initial noise, this time he calmed down within 15 mins, enough so that he even took a treat from me. He even jumped straight into the car after the session and sat straight down, without panting and circling for half of the journey! We know we've got a long way to go, but we're going to try the T-Touch homework we've been given (10 mins a day) and hopefully we'll all have a much more tolerable Divali, Bonfire night and New Year! If anybody has got a stress head dog (noise or otherwise) I can definately recommend this workshop.
